A Golden Girl

7 Jun

As some fans of ‘The Golden Girls’ may know, Rue McClanahan – Blanche Devereaux (the overly sexed golden girl) passed this week. As my husband found out in recent weeks (apparently on WE TV there are mini marathons of The Golden Girls almost every night) I’m a huge fan of the show. I don’t know what it was about that show — whether it was that entrance song, or those women that liked to talk about menopause and sex — it still left you wanting more. (By you, I mean me….my husband prays that The Ghost Whisperer will come on next, just for something different.)

The crazy antics, the one liners, the men, and of course – the cheesecake — which brings me to my inspiration this week. The women would frequent the kitchen, and take to some late night noshing on cheesecake while recalling past ‘memories’, solve their sinful indiscretions or funny predicaments, over cheesecake! As midnight snacks go, cheesecake ain’t half bad!

As a high schooler and a girl not going through ‘the change’ and getting ‘the curse’, I was in love with watching these four women. The 80’s version of ‘Sex and The City’! My admiration of Rue McClanahan’s character, Blanche, came from her own knowledge of being sure of herself. She was a sharp-tongued Southern belle who knew she was ‘devastatingly gorgeous’. Being one to always want the limelight, this character self-proclaim her sex appeal and beauty.  Blanche Devereaux showed how vulnerable and ballsy she was. However, there was more to Blanche than that. She had charm, whit, manners, and was ‘Big Daddies’ little girl – at any age. She was ‘breathtakingly gorgeous’!

I’m sad to see this actress leave this earth, but, I thank her for the life lessons, the menopause remedies….and the laughs! My cheesecake is for you…
